2010 Kids Summer Camp!!

11th anniversary of Summer Series program!

Since 1999, kids have enjoyed learning martial arts subjects that are not normally taught in their regular classes. These specialty-class events have introduced hundreds of kids to interesting forms of martial arts such as Eagle Claw, Chinese swordsmanship, Japanese swordsmanship, exotic Chinese weapons, Wushu, tumbling, grappling, Karate, and even how to make their own training equipment!

This year, the 11th anniversary of the Summer Series events, we are offering a MEGA-CAMP! All the subjects of our 8 week summer program have been chosen *by the students themselves* !! Here are the subjects they chose, out of at least 50 subjects:

* Learn to make your own duct tape Bullwhip: Using only duct tape, rope, and a wooden dowel, Sifu DeJesus will teach how to do a "4 plait" around a rope core, using the duct tape instead of expensive leather. We'll learn 2 basic whip "cracks", and learn how to target with it.

* Samurai Sword: All students will get their own wooden sword to train with and keep as their own. we'll learn the traditions of Japanese sword arts, the proper ettiquette, and a few Kata (forms) of "Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei Iaido", an art that Sifu DeJesus still studies and practices to this day.

*Tai Chi: Students will learn the Yang style 10 forms routine and learn basic Tai Chi partner "push hands" (an interactive drill that teaches body awareness and movement sensitivity).

*Self defense: One of our coaches will don the "RedMan armored suit" and the students will learn to apply their self defense skills with *full power*. The armored suit provides realistic self defense training.

*Chain whip: This fun kung fu apparatus will NOT be made with metal chains, but instead, rope and toilet paper tubes! This apparatus really enhances hand-eye coordination.

*Basic Dagger: Students will learn the basic dagger skills of Filipino Martial Arts.

*Mantis Kung Fu: Basic techniques and form of the imitative style of "praying mantis" kung fu. We'll learn how to use our hands and legs, and even our eyes to imitate the quick movements of the mantis!

Yes, the students chose these subjects on their own by popular vote!

Special Events, Classes, Performances:

Coming Soon! Monthly open meditation gatherings!

Beginning July 25th, and the last Sunday evening of every month thereafter, Sifu Restita will host "Light Circle", an open meditation/circle of intent gathering, from 5 to 6 pm (time subject to change depending on majority vote) at Seattle Wushu Center. Everyone of all ages is welcome, no experience required. All sessions are free, however donations are gladly accepted for use of the space.

Bodyworkers, energy workers of all modalities, martial artists, yoga practitioners, Tai Chi players, young and old, anyone who wants to practice their chosen mode of meditation are welcome to join us! Even if you have no experience in meditation, join us in monthly wonderful times of awareness, "mental recess", and fellowship! We'll help you get started on simple meditation exercises!

Sometimes we'll ask one of the experienced people to share one of their meditation methods with us for truly invigorating learning experience! Zhan Zhuang, Gassho meditation, Zazen, Dhyana, Tibetan bowl meditation....all methods and styles are welcome here.

Please bring a cushion or zabuton to sit on, or if you have a meditation bench feel free to bring that. We have some chairs and optional "seating" for those who cannot sit on the floor for extended periods. Please wear comfortable clothing that is not too tight.

All sessions will start with simple Qigong movements and breathing led by Sifu Restita, followed by group meditation while seated in a circle (or groups of circles, depending on number of participants). Some sessions will be silent, some with meditation music, some with bowl tones....each session is meant to be unique!

After sessions, feel free to join us at the Chinese restaurant next door for tea, snacks, and socializing!

We will start off the Light Circle gatherings on July 18th, with future gatherings happening on the first Sunday of each month thereafter.  While many of us may already benefit from the welcome respite of our "thinking and logical" mind with daily solo meditation, it is also a wonderful experience to come together in concert in seeking clarity, serenity, and even setting goals and positive intentions/affirmations. The sharing of energy and compassion, and gaining new friends are also added bonuses!

Please email me at seattlewushu@gmail.com to let me know of your interest in this ongoing monthly event, and to let me know if you plan on joining us for the kickoff session. Also, please let me know if you have other time slots that you feel would be good for the gathering. After receiving input, I'll send everyone a notice of the finalized monthly meditation times. However for right now, let's tentatively say "5 pm".  So bring your cushions, meditation benches, bowls, etc.!  We hope to see you for our kickoff session on July 25th at 5 pm!

Seattle Wushu Center is currently enrolling

for "Tiny Tigers" Kung Fu class!

This new class is for preschool age children, ages 3 to 5 years old. This class features fun interactive martial arts exercises and activities to strengthen youngster's minds and bodies, build coordination, enhance social skills, and to give a fun activity where Moms and Dads are welcome to join in the fun!

Parents are are welcome to come out onto the studio floor with their children for certain activities, and to add more smiles and laughter to the fun atmosphere!

The Tiny Tigers curriculum (a blend of Chinese Wushu / Kung Fu and Tai Chi) was designed by Restita DeJesus so that very young children may experience the benefits of martial arts exercises. She has previously only taught this type of class for birthday parties and children's events, and is now offering the "Tiny Tigers" curriculum as an ongoing class. Each session is 30 minutes, a perfect time frame to keep children occupied and engaged in the activites.

Children are invited to try 1 free introductory session. Classes are on Saturdays from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. Children may come to one class or both. (see our schedule and fees here)
